For authors

A useful question.
A careful account.

Show what constrained care, what was evaluated, what the evidence supports and where the findings may not transfer.

Three article families

Choose the form that best serves the work.

01

Original research

Clinical, technical or health-system research with a clear question, appropriate methods, explicit outcomes and an honest account of limitations. Negative or null findings remain eligible.

State the setting, comparison, outcomes and relevance to constrained care.

02

Evidence-based reviews

Reviews that clarify a clinical question and explain how the evidence was selected. Systematic reviews should report a reproducible search and synthesis method.

Distinguish established evidence, uncertainty and interpretation.

03

Visual clinical or technical reports

Concise reports built around a clear teaching point, with purposeful images or diagrams. Explain the clinical constraint, safety limitations and level of evidence.

A case does not establish efficacy; a technical demonstration does not establish clinical validation.

For photographers & visual contributors

Your image can be the contribution.

We also invite photography, clinical and scientific images, illustrations and visual essays for the annual physical book. These may stand alone; a research manuscript is not required. Help us show the people, places, observations and experiences that give frontier medicine its character.

Photography & image guidance →

Make the first submission readable.

Use a clear manuscript and separate figure files. Elaborate house formatting is not needed for initial assessment. Include enough detail for an editor to understand the work and its ethical basis.

Manuscript and figures

Include a title, summary or abstract, main text, references and figure legends. Research should describe methods and results distinctly. Reviews should explain evidence selection.

Keep figures legible, with labels, scales and meaningful legends. Identify any reused material and its source. Use the reporting guideline appropriate to the study design.

Authors, funding and interests

List authors, affiliations, contributions and the corresponding author’s email. Confirm that every author has reviewed and approved the submission.

Disclose funding, the sponsor’s role, relevant financial or nonfinancial interests, and any AI assistance used in preparing the work. Authors remain responsible for accuracy and integrity.

Ethics, consent and privacy

Include the applicable ethics approval, waiver or determination, and relevant trial registration. Explain any limitations or exceptions.

Remove identifiable patient information from text, images and file metadata. Where publication consent is required, confirm that it has been obtained. Do not send consent forms containing personal details, raw identifiable clinical records or other sensitive source data with the initial manuscript.

Related work and permissions

Disclose relevant preprints, prior presentations and related manuscripts. Identify any overlapping publication or concurrent consideration.

Confirm that figures and other third-party material can be submitted for review. Publication permissions and the written author agreement must be completed before publication.
