The annual physical book

A year of discovery.
A book to keep.

Selected articles and research from the year, brought together with exceptional photography and images in a carefully composed physical volume.

Science gives us a way to understand.
Images give us a way to see.

The annual book brings both into conversation. It gathers work that stands out for its scientific contribution, clinical insight or visual power, then gives it room to be read, seen and considered.

Through selection, sequencing and design, the volume gives form to the field’s complexity: the people, places, uncertainty and ingenuity behind the work. It is conceived as a book to leave on a table, return to and keep.

The year, thoughtfully selected.

The volume will draw on standout articles and research published by Advances in Frontier Medicine during the year, alongside selected photography and visual contributions. Scientific explanation and visual storytelling will shape the book together.

Included research will retain a clear path to its full online article and any later corrections. Online articles remain free to read.

Selection for the book is editorial and is considered separately from journal acceptance. Format, price and availability will be announced when production funding is confirmed.

Contribute a way of seeing.

We invite photographs, clinical and scientific images, illustrations and visual essays that reveal something about frontier medicine. A single compelling image or a carefully chosen sequence can contribute to the book.

The work may show the environments in which care happens, the people and practices that make it possible, the tools of the field, or a scientific observation that deserves a closer look.

Photography and images may be submitted on their own. A research manuscript is not required for consideration as a visual contribution to the annual book.

Give the image its context.

  • Include a title, a short caption and a few sentences about the image’s connection to frontier medicine.
  • Name the creator and copyright holder, give the requested credit and provide a contact email. Identify any previous publication.
  • Provide the original or highest-quality available file. For a series, indicate the intended sequence.
  • Explain how the image was made and any substantial edits. Clearly label illustrations, reconstructions and synthetic imagery.
  • Confirm the permissions and consent needed for publication. Remove patient identifiers and avoid sending private clinical records or signed consent forms with the initial contribution.

Contributors retain copyright. Permissions for the agreed print and digital uses will be confirmed before publication. Submission does not guarantee selection for the book.
